In Homa Bay, Kenya, the Achungo Farm stands as a symbol of resilience and renewal. This land is more than just soil and crops; it’s a testament to the power of knowledge and self-sufficiency. Through a partnership with the Hunger to Harvest program, the local community has gained essential agricultural skills, enabling them to provide for themselves and their families.
Recently, HHI returned to Achungo Farm to continue this journey of empowerment, teaching skills such as insect, disease, and weed control, proper harvesting and storage, and food preservation. These workshops have become a catalyst for change, transforming lives in the community.
Akumu, a passionate gardener, shared his story with enthusiasm: “The training opened doors to other agricultural skills. My creativity is at an all-time high. From this pyramid garden, I harvested more than I expected. Nothing is wasted, and every space counts for harvest.”
Griffin (pictured above), another attendee, revealed a different journey of transformation: “I wasn’t coaxed to attend the training, but my boyhood’s brambles and briars of hunger left me without other options. I started making pawpaw fruit seedlings, and I never regretted it. My life now doesn’t match up with before. This activity is paying a lot. Thank you for championing a change in my life.” Griffin’s story is a powerful reminder of how knowledge can combat hunger and create opportunity.
Ayanda also experienced profound personal growth: “The training was like I saw an open heaven. I had a sense of doing something worthwhile. Thanks to the Lord, my hope was seeded. I am now spinning tomorrow’s dreams and repressing yesterday’s regrets with all confidence,” she eagerly shared.
Achungo Farm is not just a farm; it is a beacon of hope. Through knowledge and collaboration, hunger is being replaced with abundance, and despair with dignity. Praise the Lord for hunger being turned into a harvest!
