Through your support, HHI’s Disaster Response team is able to make a meaningful difference. In July, the Indian state of Kerala was hit by unprecedented rainfall, causing devastating mudslides in the Wayanad district. Thousands were displaced, and rescue efforts lasted for weeks as all of the bridges and most of the roads were completely destroyed, while floodwaters continued to wreak havoc.
HHI Trainer Anusha organized a team of 12 members from her church to collect supplies and travel to the affected area, with family connections providing housing. Upon arrival, Anusha befriended four local volunteers, who had handed over their government IDs as they searched for body parts in the mud, hoping to find their own family members. Using quick thinking, a friendly smile, determination, and a heart full of compassion, Anusha helped transport supplies in small quantities into the hardest-hit areas and began distribution efforts. Meanwhile, bodies were still being recovered from the mud by volunteers, and Anusha’s team was there to offer support.
The largely Muslim population flocked to HHI’s distribution points, sharing their heartbreaking stories of loss. In response, Anusha’s team purchased additional supplies such as bed mats and cooking materials for more than 100 families. Throughout this, the team listened to the locals’ stories, shared embraces, prayed for healing, and embodied Jesus’s love during a profoundly difficult time.
This is what we love about our HHI coordinators—they go above and beyond to share Christ in tangible ways. They are present, transparent, accountable, and determined.
Pictured are Prasanti and Anusha sharing a hug with a Muslim woman who had lost her entire family. She had left her home the day before, and when she returned, her family was gone.
In the midst of devastation, Prasanti and Anusha showed that even the smallest acts of love and compassion can bring hope, embodying Christ’s presence in a broken world.
